Cruz

My wolf threatened to peek out, the stress more than either of us wanted. I let out a breath, and let my claws slide from beneath my fingertips. Shifting into a wolf wasn’t easy. Most shifts took blood, sweat, tears, and pain in order to go from one form to another. I could sense every single pinprick of sensation as my claws slid out of my fingertips, as my fangs elongated. But it was a welcome pain, one that quickly turned into bliss that told me that I was doing this for a reason. That I was my own power.

The shifters were out in the world now, there was no reason to hide this other than for good PR, and not to scare some poor unsuspecting human as they walked past. But I was at the edge of Jade’s wards, and we were as safe as we could be within them. Although I wasn’t sure how well they could last against an onslaught of the magic we had been seeing. I wasn’t even sure if Jade had seen this magic before. For all I knew, the monsters that hunted us all were just waiting for the right moment. I kept thinking about all of that, because if I didn’t, I would have to deal with the idea that a monster’s blood ran through my veins.

Everything made sense now, the way that Blade had either ignored or paid too much attention to me.

Blade had wanted to rule over the Talon Pack, and the other Packs in the US. And in order to do that, he had aligned with a dark witch and claimed her as his butchered mate, even though they hadn’t had the proper bond.

He started a great war between factions, one that I had fought in, but not on the side he wanted.

I had been strong enough to break the call of the Alpha. To push back against his order for me to kill the Talon Pack, like many of us had. And the ones who hadn’t been strong enough to defy the Alpha, we had hidden. They had cried in pain and curled into balls, mostly in wolf form, as they had tried to go against their Alpha’s wishes.

All of us had done what we could to protect the others. It hadn’t always been easy, but we had tried.

I had been able to do it because of my dominance, because he was my father. Just like Chase had eventually been able to break through the bindings that had captured him for so long.

Audrey had been the first to defy him, stronger than all of us combined.

The Beta of the Aspen Pack had always been the most courageous, the most forceful, all to protect her people when no one else could.

When Blade died, a new hierarchy had entered into the Aspen Pack.

Audrey had stayed as Beta, and the rest of us had changed. I was no longer a soldier, fighting for a war I didn’t believe in, but now I was the Heir, Chase’s left hand.
